Le sol recouvert de poussière de pierre noire, jonché de fusains cassés, d’empreintes noires éparpillées, on se retrouve plongé au coeur d’un univers pictural éphémère, celui du peintre Valentin Van der Meulen.
Accroché au mur se dresse un dessin aux dimensions surhumaines avec pour seule représentation le visage d’un foetus prise lors d’une échographie. Noir et blanc. Fantomatique. «Je veux écraser le dessin pour qu’il apparaisse» me confie-t-il.
Après un long moment d’observation, il s’approche avec détermination pour se lancer dans une danse acharnée ponctuée de larges mouvements, de soupirs et de râles. Il commence à effacer à coups de gommes l’image pour une création/destruction. Peu à peu, l’image originelle s’évapore pour laisser place à une nouvelle interprétation de cette même image. A genoux, perché sur un sceau, il a cette gestuelle empreint de liberté et paradoxalement maitrisée. Une heure plus tard, le dessin quasiment effacé, il ne reste de son existence passée que quelques traces résiduelles au sol et de la poussière volatile sur le visage de l’artiste. Les traits tirés comme après avoir mené un combat, il laisse échappé « Ca marche, il fallait tout effacer pour le voir ! » Une surprenante session de travail où la pérennité de l’œuvre n’existe plus mais laisse place à une idée de renouvellement et de renaissance perpétuels grâce à l’effacement. Franck Stella disait : «Ce que vous voyez est ce que vous voyez.». Pas si sûr.

Ephemeral Art
Although Parisian by adoption, the artist Valentin van der Meulen will open his studio doors for a very private session.
Imagine the stone ground covered with black dust from broken charcoal and black footprints scattered around... It is here that we find ourselves immersed in the heart of an ephemeral universe created by the painter, Valentin Van der Meulen. Hanging on the wall stands a drawing with superhuman dimensions, left only with the face of a fetus taken during an ultrasound. Black and white. Ghostly.
"I want to crush ideas on the spot; I want the drawing itself to appear," he tells me there. After a period of observation, he approached the same artwork with determination, engaged in a fierce dance punctuated by large movements, sighs and gasps as he erased the strokes that created the image to give way for the process of creation / destruction. Gradually, the original image dissipated to make room for a new interpretation of the same image. What we find this time are knees, perched on a seal--a gesture that is paradoxically full of freedom and yet still controlled. An hour later, drawing almost erased, all that remains of its existence are just a few residual traces of soil and dust on the face of the artist. "It works," says Valentin. "It was easy to see everything!" This was a surprising work session where the continuity of the work no longer exists but instead, it gives way to a sense of renewal and rebirth through the continual erasure. It was Frank Stella who said: "What you see is what you see.".
But, in this case, we can never be too sure.
